描述Understanding the relationship between the structures and functions of calcified tissues is essential for an understanding of their pathology. Material selected for inclusion in this volume intentionally favour the more physical and physico-chemical aspects of contemporary research.

Mineral deposits in tissues,al described in subsequent chapters. Furthermore, because of the complexity of many of the minerals, it is impossible to understand how their structures are defined without some appreciation of the techniques involved. Several techniques which are important subjects of current research are described in more detail in chapters devoted to them.

Some characteristics of mineralised collagen,reviously available information should have sufficed for an acute observer. It is well known that the type I collagen in bone differs from that in soft tissue. For example, the collagen in bone cannot be split by collagenase until the tissue is demineralised. Also, the collagen in bone requires a much higher temperature to gelatinise.
