Buddhist decline in India to start from the undeniable fact that Buddhism in India was popular. The name Mahayana itself is an indication of this. The Mahayana was the vehicle ‘for the people’, it was the comprehensive way. By the use of this term its adherents affirmed the difference in principle between their way and the way of the spiritual elite, the Hinayana.
