The Systemic Treatment of Bone Metastases,Skeletal involvement is one of the most distressing and common complications of many solid cancers, particularly breast, lung, prostate, thyroid and kidney. The high incidence of many of these cancers and the frequency of bone involvement means that those treating patients with metastatic bone disease face a large scale clinical problem.

Radiotherapy in the Management of Bone Metastases,t of the effective pain relief in bone metastases was in 1907 following irradiation of pelvic metastases from carcinoma of the breast (Leddy 1930). Since these early observations radiation has become established as a highly effective treatment for painful bone metastases.

Isotope Therapy For Bone Metastases,ule to target radiotherapy to a tumour has been well established with the use of iodine-131 in the treatment of follicular thyroid cancer and phosphorus-32 to treat polycythaemia rubra vera (Seidlin et al. 1946; O’Mara 1978).

In this chapter, however, the main focus will be on those symptoms more particularly caused by the bone involvement itself such as bone pain, poor mobility or anaemia, and the psychological support needed by such patients.
