Analytical Characterization of Vacuolar Membranes from Higher Plantses in osmotic regulation, space filling, deposition of metabolic products, and compartmentation of hydrolytic enzymes. A Study of Transport in Tonoplast Vesicles Using Spin-Labelled Probestributed, this gives the internal volume. If the probe is a membranepermeable ion, it will distribute according to the potential. If it is a weak acid or base which is permeable only in the unionized form, it will distribute according to the pH gradient across the membrane.

The H,-Translocating ATPase in Vacuolar Membranes of ,e (Legerton and Weiss 1979). Because the vacuoles contain a majority of the organism’s hydrolytic enzymes and have an internal acid pH, they presumably also function like animal cell lysosomes (Matile 1978).
