How Justice Pays, people typically have had terrible abusive childhoods, and their depredations against others seem to represent a kind of revenge for what they suffered in childhood. A life of revenge shows an underlying unhappiness, and one can no more be happy with a life of taking revenge than with a life of scratching a proliferation of itches.
