Root Sheaths as an Adaptation to Soil Moisture Stress in Arid Zone Grassesdrical sand sheaths surrounding the shallow lateral roots. These roots also have an aerenchymatous outer cortex which disintegrates at maturity. Various functions have been proposed for the sand sheaths: evidence reviewed here suggests that they are primarily an adaptation to soil moisture stress.
