There are threeprimary areas to be addressed when higher performance and lower poweris desired. The first area is the device technology. Scaling ofdevices has realized steady improvements for many years. The secondarea is improved circuit design techniques. The final area is at thearchitectural level. This monograph focuses on the problem of lowpower GFSK/GMSK modulation and presents an architectural approach forimproved performance. The new architecture is a modulated S-Dfractional-N frequency synthesizer. The key innovation is an automaticcalibration technique, which operates in the background. Theavailability of the calibration circuit makes high data rate, lowpower modulation possible. ..From the Foreword:. Automatic Calibration System,mple block diagram has been developed for a system which is capable of estimating the gain error.
