Reinhard P?schel,Lev A. Kalu?ninons are far removed from conditions in the “natural” environment. In the latter case, the microorganisms are subjected to consistent fluxes in very low (“suboptimal”) levels of nutrients. Attempts to grow these microorganisms in a laboratory environment where nutrients are plentiful often stresses microorganisms and impairs their ability to grow.
