Furthermore, we offer an overview about first in vitro and in vivo evidences, which highlight an altered morphology of glial cells in brains of psychiatric patients and animal models of neuropsychiatric disorders.

Treatments for BD are ineffective in a large proportion of cases, and astrocytes represent new therapeutic targets that can also serve as biomarkers of illness progression and treatment responsiveness in BD.

Astroglia in the Vulnerability and Maintenance of Alcohol Use Disordersease in the characterization of several of the relevant mechanisms, but much remains to be done for a full understanding of the astrocytes’ contribution to the vulnerability to alcohol dependence and abuse and for using that knowledge in designing effective therapies for AUDs.
