Phylogeny of the higher taxa (Subphyla, Classes, Orders, and Superfamilies) has been mainly approached in two different ways. In this paper I loosely term these approaches the ‘restrictive’ and ‘historical’, respectively.

Crustacean phylogeny inferred from 18S rDNA, (Figure 14.1(b)). Still another view (Bowman and Abele, 1982), presented as a classification rather than a phylogeny, divides crustaceans into six classes: the five aforementioned groups and the Ostracoda (Figure 14.1(c)).

A phylogeny of recent and fossil Crustacea derived from morphological characters,in the Crustacea on what can be a viable, functioning arrangement of parts, and there is often a gross similarity of form and function in similar habitat types (e.g. mystacocarids, bathynellaceans and ingolfiellan amphipods in interstitial habitats).
