Advances in Science, Technology & Innovation variations have a noticeable effect on observed line profiles only if the pole is not too far from the center of the visible stellar disk. Therefore, the phenomenon provides an easy-to-use criterion for the identification of (rapidly rotating) stars seen at small to intermediate inclination angles.
