From this one can visualise the infinite variety of environments which have occurred during the long history of the Earth. One can group these environments into a limited number of categories.

The Shores of the Auversian SeaAt the beginning of the late Eocene, in . or . . times, a marine transgression flooded the Paris Basin from the west. It formed a gulf which reached as far as Champagne to the east and which was separated from the Belgian basin by the Artois ridge. This sea was surrounded by a complex of lakes and lagoons (Fig. 124).
