Die Grundgesetze der klassischen Mechanik,This chapter discusses the history, examples, motivation and first definitions of viscosity solutions. Viscosity solutions were introduced first by Crandall and Lions in 1983 as a uniqueness criterion for 1st order PDE. The essential idea regarding passage to limits was observed earlier by Evans in 1978 and 1980.

Existence of Solution to the Dirichlet Problem via Perron’s Method923 for the Laplacian. However, for this specific PDE there exist ad hoc variants of this method which utilise the “variational structure” of certain PDE and can be alternatively used to prove existence.
