Airway Epithelial Metabolism and Airway Smooth Muscle Hyperresponsiveness,s an important role in asthma. The clinical response in asthma depends on both the degree of the stimulus and the degree of responsiveness of the smooth muscle. Thus, stimuli that normally produce no clinical response can produce symptoms in the presence of smooth muscle hyperresponsiveness.
