The USSRThe desert zone of the USSR covers an extensive area from the Caspian Sea in the west to the foothills of the Dzhungar Ala-Tau, Tien-Shan and Pamirs-Alai in the east and south-east. The northern border of the zone runs along the latitude 48 ° North, the southern border crosses the foot-hills of the Kopet-Dag and Paropamise.

Developments in Geotechnical Engineering in south-east Spain and a small island in the south (36 °N and 3 °W app.) in the sub-region III of the Map are the only two truely arid regions. These areas together occupy only 0.5% of the total area of the country. These two areas are designated as Almeria‘a(chǎn)nd Alboran’ respectively. Climatically
