影響因子The information revolution of this century was brought about by photonics based on simple and common materials, such as glasses and semiconductors. Although semiconductors will continue to be of central importance in the present century, glasses will also be of great importance in future photonic devices since they have various advantages over other materials in homogene- ity, transparency, easy fabrication and excellent solvent properties. This book focuses on selected topics which are new and of fundamental importance in the applications of active glasses in photonic devices based on our research concept called "induced structure. " The book originates from a final report of the Hirao Active Glass Project (HAP), Exploratory Re- search for Advanced Technology (ERATO), Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST). Most of the reports in the book concern glasses under the action of very strong electromagnetic fields such as that induced by femtosec- ond lasers. They include creation of induced structures in glasses, analysis of induced structure, and some functional devices using active glasses. The optical properties of glasses doped with rareearth ions have been investigated intensively, and these glasses have been used as materials for lasers, optical amplifiers and so on. However, only a few studies have been made of the induced structure in rare-earth-ion-doped glasses.

Controlling Menus and Toolbars,aterials, were described. In this chapter, two kinds of ultrafast optical switches that are demonstrated with femtosecond laser pulses are introduced: THz optical switching in glasses containing bismuth oxide [335] and ultrafast optical Kerr-shutters using metal-nanoparticle dispersed glasses [336].

https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4302-0069-7 forms such as bottles, large flat plates and fibers. Moreover, almost all of the elements in the periodic table, such as rare-earths, transition metals and noble metals, can be “stuffed” into glass. This results in splendidly colorful glass with various functions.
