What this knowledge amounted to, Burns gladly specified: ‘scenes of swaggering riot and roaring dissipation were as yet new to me … I learned to look unconcernedly on a large tavern-bill, and mix without fear in a drunken squabble’ (AL). As a teenager, by his own admission, he enjoyed drink and tavern life.
