Removed From Poweras been made to try to attract more women into science and engineering generally, but the results so far can only be seen as disappointing. While the numbers of women entrants to engineering courses, unlike the case of computing, have actually increased, they remain a tiny proportion of the total.

Opting Out Of Technology: A Study of Girls’ GCSE Choices over the past few years by the declining proportion of women amongst our students. In 1979, 20% of the students entering Computer Science and related single-subject degree schemes at Leeds were women, but since then the proportion has tended to decrease, reaching just 9% in 1988.

Where Are the Girls Now?eport [Butcher 85] highlighted the IT skills shortages and stresses the fact that IT companies cannot afford to ignore the intellectual resources offered by women at a time of growing skill shortages and declining school and university populations: this is still relevant.

A Study of Computing Experiences of Female A-Level Maths Studentshis phenomenon [Evans 87, Lovegrove 87, Soper 88]. In this study I have analysed the replies to a questionnaire which was distributed to A Level maths students in order to assess their past experiences of computing and the impact on future career aspirations. The replies to the questionnaires were analysed to study gender differences.
