The Amateur Astronomer,An important factor in distinguishing the amateur astronomer from the mere dilettante is that the amateur sets out to follow some form of research program. This was certainly Denning’s viewpoint. For all this, however, Denning stressed the importance of setting time aside for teaching, and the bringing of new observers into astronomy.
