Symmetry and Locality in Image RepresentationAbstract This chapter describes the way in which symmetry and locality affect the choice of an image representation. After discussing these concepts and the role they play in image analysis, examples of a number of applications of the ideas to problems such as image segmentation and motion estimation are described briefly.

Image Compression Using Spline Based Wavelet Transforms of discrete interpolatory splines. These filters outperform the traditional biorthogonal 9/7 filters which are frequenty used in wavelet based compression. The new filters and the biorthogonal 9/7 are incorporated into SPIHT in order to measure and compare their performance with one well known codec.

The Double Density DWThe same scale. Like the dual-tree DWT, the oversampled DWT presented here is redundant by a factor of 2, independent of the number of levels. In comparison, the redundancy of the undecimated DWT grows with the number of levels.
