描述Large areas of crops are now grown under water-stressedconditions on non-irrigated and and under limited irrigation insemi-arid and arid regions. In the future, this area of water-stressedcrops will increase as a result of increasing competition from otherwater users, declining ground water levels, and the bringing intoproduction of fragile lands that have low water-holding capacity, suchas sandy desert soils. Consequently, strategies and practices toincrease total yields and efficient water use must be improved. Afterthe introductory material and keynotes, the book is divided into fourparts. .Part I covers soil water management, Part II deals with modelapproaches to evaluate the soil-water-atmosphere interactions, PartIII treats water saving techniques through soil conditioning, and PartIV discusses case studies of water management systems. .WaterSaving. .Techniques for Plant Growth. thus represents a generalaccount of interest and activities of the various scientificdisciplines which are concerned in desert encroachment as part ofglobal change. .

Water Conservation in Arid Zonesion is best defined as water management to minimize transfer of water to a place or condition which diminishes its usefulness to the intended user. Water conservation can be achieved by reducing evaporation, transpiration, and quality degradation ; by cloud seeding ; increasing groundwater recharge
