Pulsed Neutron Devices and Spectroscopy, distinguishing saline formations waters from hydrocarbons. Chlorine, which is nearly always present in formation waters, has a large absorption cross section. Measurement of the macroscopic absorption cross section (∑) can provide the means for identifying salt water and for estimating the water saturation.
